Vitality, subtle awareness, and the art of conscious participation

Pay attention to what brings you alive
A walk can leave us clearer. A meaningful conversation can feel nourishing. Quiet time can reveal how much we have been carrying. When people speak about energy, they are often describing something intimate: the felt quality of being alive and available to life.
Spiritual traditions offer languages for this experience, including concepts of prana, qi, and subtle awareness. Their meanings come from particular systems of practice and philosophy. Within the Portal to Ascension perspective, exploring energy is an invitation to become more conscious of how we participate in ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us.
Practice gives the inquiry a place to begin
Mindful movement and breathing offer accessible ways to explore vitality. Tai chi combines movement with attention and is the subject of research on areas such as balance, physical function, and wellbeing. NCCIH's overview describes evidence for several applications while noting that outcomes vary by population and study. [1]
Breathwork is another developing field. A 2023 meta-analysis of randomized trials found small-to-medium improvements in self-reported stress and related mental health outcomes. The authors also identified methodological limitations and called for stronger studies. [2]
These findings give the conversation practical substance. We can investigate how a particular practice affects our experience without needing to settle every metaphysical question first. A gentle movement session or a few comfortable breaths may help us notice patterns of effort, rest, and attention.
The subtle dimension has its own language
Practices such as Reiki are often approached as experiences of presence, care, and spiritual connection. People may use the language of energy to describe what they feel in that setting. A practitioner should be clear about the nature of the offering and the freedom to participate in a way that feels comfortable.
Research has not established the proposed Reiki energy field or clear effectiveness for treating health conditions. [3] This leaves its spiritual interpretation and a person's subjective experience distinct from a demonstrated medical mechanism. It also gives researchers questions to investigate, rather than requiring seekers to stop reflecting on what an experience means to them.
The same respect for clarity applies across traditions. Qi, prana, measurable electrical activity, and everyday vitality are related through the questions people ask, but they are not interchangeable technical terms. Understanding a practice in its own context can deepen appreciation.
Build a relationship with your own rhythms
Keep a brief record of what leaves you nourished or depleted. Include sleep, movement, time outdoors, meaningful connection, and the pace of your commitments. Choose one supportive practice and give yourself time to notice it. Persistent unexplained fatigue deserves appropriate medical assessment alongside your wellbeing exploration.
At New Living Expo, energy belongs at the meeting point of embodied practice, spiritual curiosity, and research. Come to experience, ask questions, and discover what supports a fuller relationship with life. The invitation is to cultivate awareness of your own rhythms and carry that awareness into how you care for yourself and others.
